Ban on mobile phones

The Tamil Nadu government’s move banning mobile phones in schools under its purview is welcome. The well-intended ban is thoughtful and is to the advantage of students.

Mobile phones for school students are more of a luxury than any worthwhile need. In fact, their evil effects on students outweigh utility. The school authorities should enforce the rule strictly to the advantage of students as well as parents.

Besides distracting them from studies, mobile phones tempt students to misuse them as shown in television serials and movies. With so many public call offices, students can always contact their homes in case of an emergency.
