Corrections and clarifications

The heading of a report was “New study on how the Himalyas formed” (“Newscape” page, October 18, 2007). “Himalyas” should have been “Himalayas”.

The first paragraph in a report “Philips unveils special TV” (“Business” page, October 17, 2007) was: “Philips Electronics on Tuesday unveiled its diamond-encrusted flat TV in Mumbai priced at $155,000. About 2,250 diamonds of 225 carat each have been encrusted on the television sets.” A reader points out that the sentence should have been “About 2,250 diamonds of a total weight of 225 carats ….” (There are very few diamonds in the world of 225-carat weight and above, and are closely guarded treasures.)

The Guardian in its “Corrections and Clarifications” column says: “Oscar Wilde did not say, on his deathbed, ‘Either those curtains go or I do.’ He is reported to have said something along the lines of ‘this wallpaper will be the death of me — one of us will have to go’, but not on his deathbed.” The Reuters report appeared in the Guardian as “Genius declared: Wilde tops the wit list”, page 11, October 15, 2007. It was published in The Hindu, in some editions, on the “Newscape” page, October 16, 2007, with the heading “Oscar Wilde chosen king of quips”.

The twelfth paragraph in a report “Symonds powers Aussies to series win” (“Sport”, October 15, 2007) was: “The experienced opening pair of Tendulkar and Ganguly put on 140 runs in 26 overs to lay a solid platform.” It was incorrect as Tendulkar was dismissed off the last ball of the 25th over.

It should have been Amiesh Saheba, and not Amit Sahiba as was published under the listing for umpires in a report “Dhoni’s men face a tough test of survival” (“Sport”, October 14, 2007). Saheba was one of the on-field umpires.

It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
