Mulford meets Menon
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: United States Ambassador David C. Mulford met Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon on Thursday in what was his third formal interface with the External Affairs Ministry in four days.
The fate of the India-U.S. nuclear deal is understood to have figured prominently in the meeting.
The meeting took place within 24 hours of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh indicating in South Africa that the government had not given up persuading the Left parties on the civilian nuclear deal.
To a question after the IBSA (India-Brazil-South Africa) Summit in Tshwane on Wednesday, Dr. Singh said, “The process of evolving a meaningful consensus is still on.”
The External Affairs Ministry and the U.S. embassy remained tight-lipped about what transpired at the meeting, which was attended by officials too.
Earlier, on Monday, Mr. Mulford met External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee. Shortly afterwards, Dr. Singh spoke to U.S. President George Bush over telephone from Nigeria to inform him that there were “certain difficulties” in operationalising the deal.
Discussions held
Another round of discussions was held between External Affairs Ministry officials and Mr. Mulford on Tuesday.
Dr. Singh earlier indicated that the government was willing to concede ground to the Left parties on the issue, but they were yet to be formally told of any change in position.
With the next meeting of the United Progressive Alliance-Left committee slated for October 22, the expectation is that the government’s position would be communicated to them that day.
