Assam pollution board’s directive

Special Correspondent

Guwahati: The Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA) has urged the Chief Secretary to extend assistance to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kamrup (Metropolitan) to enable implementation of its directive for retrieval of Durga idol structures after immersion in the Brahmaputra. This was needed to lessen pollution load due to immersion.

PCBA chairman Jawahar Lal Dutta had issued the directive as the Board had observed during last year that concentration of heavy metals used in making Durga idols increased in the river following immersion of idols.

To lessen pollution loads, the PCBA directed all DCs to take steps, under the provisions of the Water Act, 1974 and Environment Protection Act, 1986, to ensure that idol structures are collected from water bodies within 24 hours of immersion.

Municipal Corporation and Town Committees must dispose of the retrieved structures.
