KOCHI: Sony Cheruvathur is the new captain of the Kerala Ranji team. The 29-year-old SBT cricketer led the State team in the all-India Moin-ud-Dowla, Buchi Babu and KSCA tournaments recently but will be making his debut as the Ranji captain this season. He takes over from Thrissur’s Sreekumar Nair. V.A. Jagadeesh, who has been in fine nick in the last few matches, is the vice-captain. The announcement came at the end of the rain-hit Jacob Trophy State senior inter-zone cricket championship at Palakkad on Thursday. “Since many of our youngsters are now playing in the under-22 inter-State matches, we have not selected the Ranji probables. But, we have selected 22 players for the KCA Trophy which will be held in Kochi from October 20 to 23,” said the Kerala Cricket Association secretary T.C. Mathew. “We will select the Ranji team after that.” The last inter-zone match of the Jacob Trophy, between North and Central, could not be completed owing to rain. No play was possible on Thursday, the concluding day. — Principal Correspondent
