NEW DELHI: Ritu Rani spearheaded the onslaught by slamming five goals as SGNP Girls’ Senior Secondary School (Shahbad) outclassed Government Girls’ High School (Bariatu, Ranchi) 9-0 in the final of the NDMC 14th Nehru junior girls’ hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Thursday. Ritu set the tone with two quick goals in the first half as the Haryana team ambled to a 3-0 lead at the interval. On resumption, the Shahbad girls, trained by the seasoned coach Baldev Singh who has moulded many a player from regional to international standard, attacked with renewed vigour to leave the Jharkhand girls panting for breath. Sandeep Kaur, skipper Ramandeep Kaur, Meenakshi and Rani scored the other goals for the defending champion that dominated the show, forcing eight penalty corners to none by its opponent. The champion team was presented Rs. 96,000 and the coach was awarded Rs. 8,000. The runner-up collected Rs. 64,000 and its coach, Saroj Krishna Mohanty, was given Rs. 5,000. Padma Raje Higher Secondary School (Gwalior) took the third place and collected Rs. 32,000. Its coach, Paramjeet Singh, received Rs. 3,000. Tika Ram Senior Secondary School (Sonepat) was adjudged the ‘promising team of the tournament’ and was presented Rs. 25,000.
