Chances of diverting the stocks to FCI godowns are low Procurement to start after kharif Kakinada: The rice mill owners in the State are in a dilemma on the fate of the rice ready for exports and piled up in the port area godowns waiting for shipments to various countries. The unexpected ban on exports has dazed the exporters and the rice millers as well. Unless the shipments are made the payment will be effected. If the government refuses to reconsider its decision, how to dispose of the rice stocks worth Rs. 350 crores, is the question lingering in the minds of those involved in the present crisis. ‘Our hands are down and unless the government comes to our rescue the situation would be very grim. Both the exporter and the miller have to bear the brunt equally. Even the ryots would be affected, as the rice mill owners would not purchase paddy hereafter’ said Dwarampudi Bhaskara Reddy President of State Rice Millers’ Association. The chances of diverting the stocks to FCI gowdons were low as the rice procurement season had ended in September. Further, the rice quality might not satisfy the FCI standards. DeadlineThe FCI area manager A. Rajagopal said that the question of accepting rice now did not rise as the deadline is over. “The procurement is meant for the public distribution system not for others’ he clarified while talking to The Hindu here on Thursday. He said they were waiting for the levy target from the government for the season that had commenced from October 1. He said the procurement would start only after Kharif crop comes into the market in the next couple of months. The civil supplies authorities are hopeful of achieving the levy target at least in the new season. There is a shortfall of 18 per cent in fulfilling the levy target during last season. As against the target of 7, 07,432 tonnes of raw rice, the procurement was only 5,88,850 tonnes. Similarly the procurement of the boiled rice was only 99,493 tonnes as against 13,3694 tonnes targeted, said P. D. Prakash Rao District supply officer. He said of the total 283 rice mills in the district, 70 mills failed to supply rice towards the levy and report was sent to the government to initiate action against the erring millers, he said.
