Khammam
KHAMMAM: Colourful processions marked the day of saddula Bathukamma – the grand finale of Bathukamma festival in the town today. Women dressed in their best of thronged in large numbers the river banks of Munneru for taking part in the rituals of the occasion. The river bank echoed to the Bathukamma songs which they sung in chorus and danced to the traditional tunes. Gaiety marked the occasion. The rituals of the worship were performed with a wide range of flowers. They are arranged row after row in a brass plate. Bathukamma grew in size during the week that preceded. Women who made ‘boddemma’ along with Bathukamma, immersed it gently in the water of the river. The civic body which used to make elaborate arrangements for the occasion paid no attention to sanitation on the river bank. Women had a great deal of discomfort in reaching the place. Many of they stayed away from the filthy surroundings. Palavarapu Chayadevi , whose Batukamma was adjudged the best was presented with a silver bowl by the Vasavi club.
