Bade Ghulam Ali Khan had stayed for a few months 40 years ago at the R&B Guesthouse in Boath
Down memory lane: Freedom fighter Gunde Rao at the R&B inspection bungalow at Boath. BOATH (ADILABAD DT.): By providing accommodation to VIPs, many Government guesthouses get innocuously associated with the process of history. The old R&B inspection bungalow at the mandal headquarter village of Boath in Adilabad district is one such edifice where the legendary Bade Ghulam Ali Khan had stayed for a few months 40 years ago before he died in April 1968 at Hyderabad. One of the finest vocalists of Hindustani classical music of his times belonging to the Patiala Gharana, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan had come to Boath around 1967 in search of Ayurvedic treatment for ailments that included partial paralysis. He sought treatment from Khursheed Ali, an amateur Ayurvedic physician, who was posted as an RTC controller at Boath. VIP guest“Khursheed Ali had learnt a lot about herbal medicine through his contacts among local tribals. On learning about the potency of herbs, the great man came to Boath and stayed at the inspection bungalow between July and November, 1967,” recalled A. Gunde Rao, a freedom fighter. “Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was perhaps the State’s guest at that time. Khursheed Ali’s effort towards the Ustad’s treatment also fetched him recognition. He was given five acres of land for the establishment of a herbal farm at Neredigonda,” recalled Shashikant Rao Deshpande, a senior advocate of Adilabad. “The maestro spread the magic of his voice during his riaz or practice sessions twice every day. During one such session, I told him that I have a feeling of sitting in emperor Akbar’s darbar. He was impressed. He subsequently staged a formal performance at the Ganesh festival in the locality,” said Mr Gunde Rao. It is apparent that the musician failed to recover and returned to Hyderabad that was his home at the time. It was at this home that he breathed his last within just a few months of leaving Boath.
