All the best: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan congratulates Mons Joseph on his being sworn in as Minister by Governor R.L. Bhatia (middle) in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The trouble-torn Kerala Congress (J) got its third Minister in the LDF Cabinet in 17 months when party MLA Mons Joseph was sworn in as Minister at a very brief function at the Raj Bhavan here on Thursday.
Leaders of the Opposition UDF and top functionaries of the Catholic Church stayed away from the ceremony, the former taking exception to the selection of Mr. Joseph as Minister through draw of lots and the latter reportedly to register their protest against the ongoing war of words over the last rites of the late CPI(M) legislator Mathai Chacko.
The Minister designate arrived with KC(J) chairman P.J. Joseph and party MLAs T.U. Kuruvilla and V. Surendran Pillai around 15 minutes ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, which lasted barely a few minutes. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Governor R.L. Bhatia. Mr. Joseph was allotted the Public Works portfolio. A notification for the purpose was issued on Thursday
Among those present were Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan, his Cabinet colleagues, MPs and MLAs belonging to various LDF constituents, senior civil and police officials and Mr. Joseph’s family members. Talking to reporters immediately after the ceremony, Mr. Joseph said his priority would be development of roads in the State.
