Sri Avittam Tirunal Granthasala at Kuriyathi in the capital city is celebrating its 67th year at people’s service on Saturday and Sunday. Other than being a place for the public to enhance their knowledge, the library has an impressive record of service in the cultural, literary, artistic and social fields extending over six decades. Started as a small reading room in 1938 and organised in its present form in 1940, the library is named after the late Avittam Tirunal of the royal family of erstwhile Travancore. The Travancore royal family played a major role in the origin and development of the institution situated on one acre of land it had gifted. A separate library for children also functions under the flagship of the Granthasala. The library serves as a centre of social, cultural, artistic and educational activities in the locality. A social service league, a nursery school, stitching class, youth club and a vanitha samiti function under the library administration. It also provides facilities for indoor and outdoor recreation. Drama contestThe annual day celebrations coincide with the Navaratri festival. The annual celebrations had been the setting for professional drama competitions, the first of its kind in the city. Today, other popular cultural activities are staged in its own auditorium, completed as a result of local participation. This year’s celebrations will be formally inaugurated by Law Minister M. Vijaykumar on Saturday. Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University M.K. Ramachandran Nair will preside over the meeting.
