Proud moment: Governor Rameshwar Thakur presenting prizes to Pavan Kumar M. of Karnataka and Kerala Directorate and Swati Suman of Maharashtra Directorate at the closing ceremony of the All-India Vayu Sainik Camp organised by the NCC Directorate (Karnataka and Goa) in Bangalore on Thursday. BANGALORE: Society should realise what it owes the brave men and women who comprise our Defence forces, Governor Rameshwar Thakur has said. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the All-India Vayu Sainik Camp organised by the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Directorate (Karnataka and Goa) here on Thursday, Mr. Thakur said it was important to remember what the country and society owed the soldiers who were not only protecting us from external aggression, but also during times of internal disturbances and emergencies. “It is not enough that we pay lip service during ceremonial occasions and then forget about them at other times.” Whatever benefits or compensation they got was a small token gesture of expressing our gratitude for their sacrifice, he said. Mr. Thakur said NCC was a manifestation of national integration, emotional integration and solidarity. Earlier, Air Commodore P. Rajesh Rao, Deputy Director General NCC (Karnataka and Goa) said 600 cadets, including 180 girls, from different parts of the country participated in the camp. The camp has been a testing ground for all air wing training in the NCC. Cadets from 15 NCC directorates participated in aviation-related activities, including gliding, microlight aircraft flying, static aero modelling, control line and skeet and .22 shooting. Speaking to presspersons, Air Comm. Rao said the Karnataka Directorate would shortly move to new premises near the Rajendra Sinhji Institute of the Army. He said the directorate had proposed the State Government to allot some land in Bangalore for training the NCC cadets. The Governor distributed trophies and prizes to the cadets. The flying and the aero modelling trophies were won by the Maharashtra cadets, while the Gujarat cadets won the drill trophy. The firing trophy was given to cadets from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh; the best technical air squadron trophy was given to the 3rd Tamil Nadu Air Squadron; and the line area trophy was given to cadets from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Those who won the prizes were Pavan Kumar M. of Karnataka and Kerala Directorate (best pilot boys); Swati Suman of Maharashtra Directorate (best pilot girls); Vishal Diggewadi and Amith M. Suthar of Karnataka and Kerala Directorate (Static); Rohit Sharma of Directorate of Himachal Pradesh (Skeet SD); and Mitilesh Chaudhry of Directorate of Rajasthan (Skeet SW).
