KWA to replace pipe, install valves

Staff Reporter

To stop bursting at Chalakuzhy Lane

KWA to replace a section of HDPE line with a DI pipe

Government to bear the expenses of replacing the line

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) will replace a section the 400 mm HDPE line laid under the Theerapatham scheme from the Vayalikkada to the Medical College Hospital with a Ductile Iron pipe as part of efforts to restore normal water supply in the line.

KWA will assume charge of this pipeline that had burst repeatedly over the past few months at Chalakuzhy Lane. These decisions were taken at a meeting of the cabinet sub-committee formed to find a permanent solution to the repeated bursts at Chalakuzhy.

As part of the restoration work the KWA will install air valves in the line. A press note issued here said the consultants and contractors of the Theerapatham scheme will be asked to complete all works assigned to them. Even though the KWA is taking over the pipeline the responsibility of the agencies that executed the Theerapatham scheme will remain unchanged, the press note added.

According to KWA officials the plan is to replace a section of HDPE line, 400 metre-long, with a DI pipe. Moreover, air valves will be installed not only on the section of replaced line but also wherever necessary along the entire route of the pipeline.

Irrigation Minister N.K. Premachandran said here that the government will initially bear the expenses for replacing the damaged line and other associated expenses. Eventually this money will be realised from the agencies that executed the Theerapatham scheme.

Apart from the Mr. Premachandran, the meeting was attended by Finance Minister T. M. Thomas Isaac, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, M. Vijayakumar, Mayor C. Jayan Babu, principal secretary Irrigation K. Jayakumar, Finance Secretary Jose Cyriac, Local Administration Secretary S. M. Vijayanand and KWA MD CV. Suresh Babu.
