A speed-breaker put up near the Panchayat Union Middle School at Samundipuram in Tirupur to protect students from speeding vehicles was damaged by anti-social elements.

TIRUPUR: Students of Panchayat Union Middle School at Samundipuram in Tirupur continues to risk their lives what with the school building located close to a road with heavy flow of traffic. The school has classes from I to IV and a nursery section working adjoining to it. The school functions in a dilapidated building and there is no space to construct a compound wall.

After conducting an inspection, Coimbatore Collector Neeraj Mittal, on Thursday directed municipal and revenue officials to close the road for vehicular traffic considering the safety of the students.

However, the Velampalayam Municipality authorities were able to put up only speed-breakers on either sides of the road following stiff resistance by the nearby residents. But one of the speed-breakers, at the entry point of the road, was damaged by unidentified persons.

When contacted, Tirupur Revenue Divisional Officer B. Murugesan said action would be initiated against those who damaged the speed-breaker. He also said the revenue officials were conducting survey to find an alternative road near the school. The work would be over in a week, he said.

Parents and teachers of the school demanded shifting of the school from the dangerous location to E.B. Colony where other four classes have been functioning. They urged the district administration to construct additional classrooms and a compound wall there and find a permanent solution.
