CLEAR STAND: Students taking out a rally seeking a ban on use of cell phones in schools in Puducherry on Wednesday.
PUDUCHERRY: Close on the heels of the Tamil Nadu Government prohibiting the use of mobile phones in schools, the territorial administration on Thursday introduced a similar ban in schools in the Union Territory. It also prohibited use of cell phones by teachers in classrooms.
“The ban comes into effect immediately,” Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan told The Hindu. “The ban was imposed in the wake of reports of students misusing cell phones.” Headmasters and principals of schools had been directed to closely monitor the implementation of the ban and take appropriate action.
Schedule for classes
In another significant decision, the Government barred private schools from conducting classes beyond 6 p.m. The decision was in the wake of complaints from parents that some schools had extended the class hours till 9.30 p.m.
They had expressed concern over the safety of their wards. Schools violating the direction will lose their recognition, the Minister warned.
Mr. Shahjahan said it had been brought to the notice of the Government that some private schools made Class X and XI students appear for public exams as private candidates. The Directorate of School Education had been asked to issue directions to all private schools not to follow the practice. Recognition of schools adopting this practice would be withdrawn.
