Agribusiness needs industry status: FICCI

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The agribusiness sector needs to be given industry status in Tamil Nadu, according to the Tamil Nadu State Council of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

In order for the State’s fledgling food processing industry to attain the same success as its northern Indian counterpart, the State Government needs to set up a Food Processing Ministry, said R. Ramamurthy of the FICCI. As an initial step, he said, a separate department could be set up within the Agriculture Ministry.

The FICCI also suggested that the government come out with a separate policy for small farmers in the same way that large and small industries were given separate treatment.

The FICCI’s State Council is hosting “Farm to Fork,” an international conference-cum-exhibition on agribusiness and food processing, here on October 26 and 27.
