KOCHI: The Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) has recommended to Customs authorities that a consignment of waste paper that arrived here early this month containing waste plastic, glass shreds, food waste and toner from photocopying machines be sent back to its place of origin. The consignment from New York was meant for a kraft paper-maker in the city. The containers, whose content weighed 61.49 tonnes, will now be sent back to New York at the expense of the importer. The Board is also contemplating legal action against the importer, a PCB official said here on Thursday. The recommendation was made after a team of PCB engineers carried out a detailed examination of three containers on Thursday after a random examination had revealed that the cargo contained items other than waste paper. PCB officials had initially examined the contents of two containers of the import cargo that arrived at the Kochi port in the first week of this month. The examination was done at the instance of the Customs authorities after they wrote to the PCB on October 3 informing it of the presence of materials that needed examination before the cargo being cleared.
