“38 Tigers killed in battles”

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The Sri Lanka military on Thursday claimed to have killed at least 38 cadres of the LTTE in pitched battles on the forward defence lines (FDLs) in the north even as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched mobile services to extend the ministry’s services to rural areas.

The first phase of this mobile service was inaugurated in Polonnaruwa district, the gateway to the east. The service is aimed at expediting services provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the public.

The Department of Immigration and Emigration, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), the Association of Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Agencies, the Department of Registrar General and the Department of Examinations are associated with the mobile service.

The services would include attestation of marriage and birth certificates, resident certificate, certificate of civil status and authentication of police reports and affidavits which are required in obtaining foreign employment.

The Ministry said it would enable the public get information about their relatives and friends stranded abroad and to get them repatriated and get information on Sri Lankan expatriates who had been either arrested or detained in foreign prisons and to obtain advice to secure their release.

It is also expected to address issues relating to Sri Lankans who died in foreign countries and to assist their next of kin to obtain arrears of payment and compensation.
