MOP Vaishnav, Loyola triumph

VICTORIOUS: M.O.P. Vaishnav College emerged the overall champion in the women’s category.

CHENNAI: MOP Vaishnav and Loyola — the two colleges that have been providing the athletes with the best of facilities and encouragement — expectedly clinched the women’s and men’s overall championship titles in the three-day AL Mudaliar athletic meet, which concluded at the Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.

MOP picked up 132 points with 16 gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals. This is the college’s fourth title. Loyola (141 points) finished with 19 gold, 10 silver and six bronze to claim the men’s title for the seventh consecutive time.

The star of the meet was MOP’s M. Sudha, who created two meet records. She clinched four gold medals in the four events—10,000m, 5000m, half marathon and 1500m—she took part. Sudha erased the half marathon record set by Maria Theresa (1 hr:33.66) in 2005-06, with a time of one hour, 29 minutes and 25.12 seconds.

Significantly, only two meet records were set and both came from Sudha, who also emerged the meet’s individual women’s champion with 20 points. B. Ezhilnilavan, M. Vijayakumar, Madhan Kumaran, Ramadoss, all from Loyola, were adjudged the joint champions in the men’s category, with 10 points each. S. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, gave away the prizes.
