Tuticorin
The machine can produce 1,500 sachets in an hour Tuticorin: The Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI) here has established a state-of-the-art automated pickle production unit at a cost of Rs. 3 lakh allocated to the institution as grants by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi. V.K. Venkataramani, Dean, said that the unit would produce and pack the fish pickle produced from trash fishes in small sachets under hygienic conditions. The institute has installed a vertical automatic fill and sealing machine for the purpose to avoid manual handling and resultant contamination. The machine could produce 1,500 sachets in an hour. Sachets of 5 gm to 50 gm would be brought out to cater to the needs of poor people who could ill-afford fish pickles coming in bottles. The 5-gm sachet would be priced at Rs. 2 and others proportionally. The institute would give on rent the facility to entrepreneurs and members of self-help groups who were interested in production of pickles. Those interested can contact P. Velayutham, professor, or the Dean. Telephone numbers: 0461 2340154, 9443555289.
