ALAPPUZHA: Kerala Congress (M) leader K.M. Mani has demanded that a special session of the Legislative Assembly be convened immediately to give statutory backing to projects to be implemented under the Kuttanad Package recommended by the M.S. Swaminathan Commission. Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Mr. Mani said the projects under various heads of the package had to be given legal support, for which laws had to be formed. A ‘Kuttanad-Alappuzha Regional Prosperity Committee’ with Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan as its chairman should also be constituted to monitor the implementation of the package. Panel constituentsStating that public representatives, envoys of farmers and their organisations, agriculture experts and government officials should be part of the ‘prosperity committee,’ Mr. Mani said the region first had to be declared a special agricultural zone. A system to ensure projects thus implemented were sustained and maintained properly should also be formed. The Kerala Congress leader added that the committee for the implementation of the package should not be politicised.
