DEPLORABLE: A open sewage canal near the general hospital in Puducherry. PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday staged a demonstration seeking immediate intervention of the Health Department to address the “shortcomings” in the functioning of the General Hospital and to improve hygiene in its surroundings. Addressing party cadres, State committee member of the party T. Murugan said the lack of staff, including specialist doctors, came in the way of the effective functioning of the hospital. Many patients from Puducherry had been denied treatment in the hospital owing to shortage of staff and the influx of people from the neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu for treatment, he alleged. On most occasions patients from Puducherry had to purchase medicines from pharmacies as the hospital did not have adequate stock. Mr. Murugan flayed the hospital authorities for not shifting the parking lot from near the emergency ward to another area. Highlighting the unhygienic environment in the vicinity of the hospital, V. Perumal, secretary of Puducherry unit of the party, said the sewage canal near the hospital had become “a breeding ground for mosquitoes” owing to dumping of waste. The canal was not desilted for a long time, he added.
