“Observe November 1 as I-Day”

PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of Communist Party of India (CPI) on Friday urged the government to observe November 1 as Independence Day of the Union Territory.

Party national council member R. Viswanathan told reporters here that it was on November 1, 1954 that the French declared Independence for the Union Territory. The official gazette and other government records mentioned November 1 as Independence Day of the territory. However, the government continued to observe April 16 as Independence Day just because it was on that day the French ratified its decision, he said.
