“Delhi not getting adequate water from Haryana, U.P.”

‘Centre has been requested to intervene for an early resolution of the matter’

Of the 73 UGRs and BPSs, 14 would be located in West and North-West Delhi


NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday said the Capital was not getting adequate water supply from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. She also said the population was increasing every day making it difficult for the authorities to provide drinking water to 1.6 crore people.

Laying the foundation stones of an underground reservoir (UGR) and a booster pumping station (BPS) at Bawana and Qutubgarh in North-West Delhi, Ms. Dikshit said the two States were not giving equal proportion of share as agreed upon earlier. She, however, assured the gathering that talks with the two State Governments were on and the Centre had also been requested to intervene for an early resolution of the matter.

Ms. Dikshit also announced that the Delhi Jal Board would construct 73 new UGRs and BPSs at various places in the Capital to ensure adequate and smooth water supply. Of the 73 UGRs and BPSs, 14 would be located in West and North-West Delhi. The total project cost would be Rs.263 crore.

The Chief Minister said that establishing of 78 lakh-litre capacity UGR at Qutubgarh would benefit 1.2 lakh population of Khera Khurd, Ochandi, Mungeshpur, Qutubgarh, Katewara, Bajidpur, Thakran, Budhanpur, Jat Khor and Punjab Khor.

To be constructed at a cost of nearly Rs.7 crore, the UGR would be completed within 18 months.

The UGR at Bawana with a capacity of 271 lakh litres would benefit about 4 lakh people in Bawana village, Bawana Industrial Area, Lampur, Ghoga, Harevali, Daryapur and Bankner. The project cost of Bawana UGR is Rs.15 crore and it too would be completed within 18 months.

Rural areas

The Chief Minister also announced that laying of sewer in rural areas would be taken up soon. Outer Delhi Member of Parliament Sajjan Kumar and other local leaders were also present at the function.
