What is the status of heads of boards and corporations now?

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Imposition of President’s Rule in Karnataka is all set to dislodge the heads of 140 government-owned boards and corporations in the State.

Some ambiguity persists, though, on whether the order applies to heads of commissions.

The Karnataka Women’s Commission’s office had remained locked up for days, fuelling speculation on the fate of the panels.

In an order dated October 12, the Chief Secretary has said that all non-official chairpersons of boards and corporations will now have to resign and surrender their vehicles immediately. Copies of this order has been sent to all heads of departments.

Karnataka Women’s Commission Chairperson Pramila Nesargi told The Hindu that though the letter by the Chief Secretary made no mention of commissions, a footnote by the Deputy Secretary did mention commissions. She said she had received no formal communication from the Governor to resign. Clerical staff, she said, had been prevented from functioning for two days. People who had come with applications had to be turned away, she added. Over 2,8000 cases are pending with the commission as of now.

Some crucial orders had been passed, she added, over the last few days.

Ms. Nesargi said she would seek a clarification on the status of the commission on Monday.
