JAIPUR: The Barsingsar thermal power project in Bikaner district of Rajasthan is likely to be completed by June 2009, providing employment to a large number of local jobless youth during and after the plant’s establishment. Union Minister of State for Coal Dasari Narayan Rao said while inaugurating the Lignite Shakti Nagar residential colony at Barsingsar over the weekend that the plant would help meet the increasing demand for energy in the country and provide electricity to the State. Mr. Rao said the mining capacity of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation would go up to 3.6 million tonnes and energy capacity to 3,200 MW after the completion of the Neyveli-Barsingsar project. The new residential colony would provide the much-needed support to the plant workers and improve their performance, he added. Rajasthan Minister of State for Mines Khema Ram Meghwal said the State would become self-reliant in power production on the completion of this and a few other projects. He said work on power projects in Dholpur, Baran, Jaisalmer and Bikaner districts was now in progress. The Managing Director of Neyveli Lignite Corporation, S. Jairaman, said the Lignite Shakti Nagar had been constructed at a cost of Rs. 23 crore.
