Bangalore: The Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) has laid emphasis on strengthening the State power supply network besides expediting development work in keeping with its commitment to provide quality power supply. In an official communiqué here on Friday, Bharatlal Meena, Managing Director, KPTCL, said that KPTCL has proposed to spend Rs. 4,000 crore for setting up 150 new stations and augmenting the capacity of 100 stations to bring down technical losses. Last year, Rs. 2,200 crore had been spent on system improvement, commissioning 88 new stations and augmenting the capacity of 104 stations. The basic infrastructure across the State is being upgraded in a big way to meet the increase in power consumption following the State’s robust industrial and economic growth. Mr. Bharatlal said that during 2006-07, the State grid handled a record energy of about 40,380 MU. “However, this is not enough,” he said. “Every year five lakh new consumers are added. We need a lot of investment to strengthen the transmission and distribution sector.” Capacity additionTo overcome the power shortage, a plan had been prepared for a massive capacity addition of 5,500 MW to the State’s power grid. This is in addition to KPTCL’s plan to add over 7,000 MW at a cost of Rs. 35,000 crore in the 11th plan period. The electricity supply companies have also launched several innovative schemes said to be the first of their kind. Bangalore Electricity Supply Company took the lead and launched the rural load management system. To reduce the distribution loss, electric supply companies have taken up re-conductoring of feeders.
