NAGAPATTINAM: The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) has so far opened 20 direct purchase centres (DPCs) in the district to procure paddy directly from farmers during the current kharif season under the decentralised procurement system.
Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar on Friday said the DPCs were opened in Mayiladuturai, Sirkazhi and Tarangampai taluks. More centres would be opened depending on the requirement of farmers.
The TNCSC was offering a price of Rs.725, including Rs.50 per quintal for Grade ‘A’ quality paddy with moisture content up to 17 per cent, and Rs.695, including Rs.50 per quintal, for common variety.
Hike in price sought
Arupathy Kalyanam, general secretary of the Federation of Farmers Associations of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, urged the State Government and the Centre to increase the procurement price of paddy at Rs.1,000 per quintal due to high cost of cultivation.
He said that while the Centre had fixed the procurement price of wheat at Rs.1,000 per quintal, the same price should also be fixed for paddy.
The procurement price of paddy and wheat was almost the same a decade ago. Now, farmers in the north were getting Rs.300 more per quintal than paddy and the paddy price should be increased immediately.
