Plan to exploit AP’s mineral wealth: TSR

Special Correspondent

‘State can double its royalty on mining’

Use South African technology for the purpose, he says

Sure of getting nod for the take over of BHPV by BHEL

VISAKHAPATNAM: The much-advanced South African mining technology could be utilised for exploiting the diamond resources in some districts of Andhra Pradesh, said Union Minister of State for Mines T. Subbarami Reddy here on Friday.

Dr. Subbarami Reddy who visited South Africa and Nigeria along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently and held bilateral talks on mining, said South Africa having huge diamond and gold deposits developed the mining technology a lot.

When the expertise was brought to India the diamond deposits available in Anantapur, Kurnool, Kadapa, Mahaboobnagar and a part of Chittoor could be exploited in a profitable manner and the State Government could double its royalty on mining from the present Rs. 2,000 crores.

The South African mining industries and the local units need to form a joint venture for the purpose and this would also benefit the indigenous units in acquiring better skills, Mr. Reddy said at a press conference. He also informed that South Africa expressed its willingness to encourage the 0.5 million tonnes Nalco alumina refinery to be set up in that country.

New mining policy

The Minister said that the new mining policy to be announced in December would help the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant to secure dedicated mines of iron ore.

In the new policy the mining resources would be made national property. At present the State Governments were given the right to decide on the mining of minerals available in their respective States and to allotment of mines to the industries.

In the case of Brahmani steel plant the mines located in its vicinity were allotted to its while VSP wanted some mines located in Orissa to be dedicated to it, but the Government there wanted the same to be allotted to the steel plants in its State, he explained.

Dr. Subbarami Reddy expressed the confidence that the Finance Ministry’s nod for the take over of BHPV by the BHEL would be obtained soon.

The Ministry raised an objection regarding outstanding dues of BHPV. He had also arranged an interview for the BHPV trade union leaders with the Prime Minister on October 23, he said.

The works worth Rs.1,335 crores to be taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru New Urban Revival Mission in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation area would be completed in two years.

“The last one year or more has been spent on making plans and pursuing the proposals but things are in place now and all the works will be completed”, he said.

MLAs Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao, S. Ranga Raju and Tippala Gurumurthy Reddy, Collector A.K. Singhal, Additional Commissioner of GVMC Pola Bhaskar and others were present.
