VISAKHAPATNAM: The East Coast Railway women boxing team is now a strong outfit, having been given an extra punch by recruiting some international and national boxers.
This team has done well in the recently held eighth senior women boxing National championship at Rudrapur in Uttarakhand and brought many medals to the Railways. Boxers from the East Coast Railway made a major contribution to the Railway team.
N. Usha won the 60 kg category gold, Ch. Kanaka Durga, Swapna Priya and Sailaja won silver medals in the 48 kg, 75 kg and 52 kg categories respectively.
GM’s gesture
General Manager of East Coast Railway S.S. Khurana felicitated the boxers at his office in Bhubaneswar a few days ago and he was so impressed with the team’s performance that he announced a reward of Rs. 20,000 to the team. Incidentally it was for the first time that cash award of such an amount was given to a single event.
Pleased by the women boxers’ achievement, Mr. Khurana suggested to the East Coast Railway Sports Association (ECoRSA) to organise a major boxing meet. It is likely to be held in Visakhapatnam a few months later.
President of ECoRSA D.K. Samantray, general secretary S.K. Patra and others congratulated the boxers at the function, according to Assistant Sports Officer of ECoRSA (Waltair) D.K. Kumar. Chief coach of boxing of ECoRSA (Waltair) B. Appanna Reddy accompanied the team to Bhubaneswar.
