dated October 20, 1957: End of dispute

Employees of the commercial banks in Calcutta, numbering about 8,000, who were on strike for the past 31 days, returned to work almost in full complement on October 19. The strike over the employees’ demand for a compensatory allowance due to “abnormal rise in price of essential commodities” was called off last night following a settlement between the employees and the bankers at the intervention of the State Chief Minister, Dr. B.C. Roy. The Chief Minister, expressing his satisfaction at the termination of the strike, said, “I am glad that the employees have listened to my advice and are prepared to withdraw the strike and return to work. It is my job to see that now that the strike is over, the conditions agreed upon, as contained in the note sent by the employees, are fulfilled by the Government employers.”
