YSR to dedicate Tadipudi lift scheme on Oct. 25

Staff Reporter

ELURU: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy will dedicate the Tadipudi Lift Scheme on October 25. With this, the water-starved lands in the upland parts, falling under 14 mandals in West Godavari district, are all set to receive the much sought-after Godavari water. Besides, the river water is also set to quench the thirst of people from several upland villages. In this connection, Dr. Reddy will address a massive rally of farmers at Annadevarapet 15km away from the site of lift project.

According to official information, the Chief Minister will formally release water from the lift scheme for 60,000 acres in the current Kharif as against the target of 80,000 acres. It may be recalled that water was released for 12,300 acres during the kharif in 2006 in the first phase. The project is expected to create a total irrigation potential of 1.22 lakh acres under the ayacut of the lift scheme by the next Kharif in 2008. Besides, it is also proposed to supply drinking water to 135 villages en route. The project is designed to draw water from the river by lift for which 28 MW of power is required. The total project cost is estimated to be over 481 crore.

Targets

Meanwhile, certain problems associated with the acquisition of land for the lift scheme reportedly hampers the official targets with respect to release of water for agriculture. The administration is facing a stiff resistance from farmers in acquiring land, especially in Nallajarla and Anantapalli areas, hampering the land acquisition process for canal execution. Even as the administration offered Rs. 3 lakh per acre, the farmers are demanding Rs 5 lakh. There also appears to be a delay in completing the exercise of land acquisition pertaining to endowment lands through court at Yarrakalva crossing. As a result, the administration lagged behind in meeting the land acquisition targets. As per the official data, the district administration is in a bind over acquiring 3,948 acres for construction of two pump houses, canals and sub lifts. But the officials acquired only 2,814 acres by August last.
