Transfer of police officials right, though late: Basu

Special Correspondent

Says it could cause some political damage

Kolkata: The State government’s decision to transfer five officials of the Kolkata Police, including the Police Commissioner, in connection with the death of computer graphics teacher, Rizwanur Rahman, is a “right one even if it came late,” veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu said here on Friday.

“It could cause some political damage,” he said, when asked by journalists whether the delay in the decision would affect the party.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee announced the transfer on Wednesday, explaining that a “political decision” to remove them had been taken earlier, but he had been advised by legal experts to keep the announcement in abeyance till the hearing on a petition in the Calcutta High Court, for an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation, was over.

Mr. Basu said he had been informed earlier that two officers would be removed first and action against the rest would be taken after the hearing was over. The judicial inquiry into the events leading to Rahman’s death will continue even though the CBI has been directed by the High Court to conduct a probe into the incident.

According to reports reaching here the CBI has registered a case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC against Rahman’s father-in-law, Ashok Todi and some others. A team of officials are on their way to the city to start investigations.

Mr. Basu was critical of political parties like the Trinamool Congress trying to make political capital out of Rahman’s death and said they had plans to nominate his elder brother as a candidate in future elections. Rahman’s body was found on September 21, a few weeks after his marriage to the daughter of Mr. Todi.
