Veena performances for harmony

Special Correspondent

Chennai: Nationwide veena performances will be organised by the Veena Foundation and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts on Sunday, to celebrate the role of the instrument in Indian classical music.

‘Veena Arpana: Harmony of the Strings for Human Harmony’ will be inaugurated with a performance by Ustad Azad Ali Khan in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, in the presence of President Pratibha Patil, a press release said. Thousands of veena performances will be organised in various parts of the country simultaneously.

The arpana is being held in commemoration of the veena’s place in Indian music and musicology, the release said.

Similar performances will be organised every year during Independence Day, Republic Day, Gandhi Jayanthi, New Year day, Vijayadasami and Eid.
