BHUBANESWAR: Korean steel major POSCO on Friday said it would begin work on its 12-million tonne capacity project in Jagatsinghpur district on April 1, 2008, which happens to be Orissa Day as well as the 40th anniversary of the company. This was indicated by Chief Executive Officer Ku-Taek Lee during his meeting with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in New Delhi on Friday. Promising all support, Mr. Patnaik said his government was making efforts to sanction more land for the project. However, POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti president Abhay Sahu said, “We will not allow the company to enter our area. The government should think of an alternative site if it wants to facilitate the setting up of the POSCO project.” PTI reports: The CPI warned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that a “bloodbath” could take place if the Orissa government took “repressive” measures in acquiring land for POSCO near Paradeep for its Rs.52,000-crore greenfield project. “It is reported that the bosses of POSCO have now approached you in this matter,” CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan said in a letter to the Prime Minister, a copy of which was released here.
