DLIGHTED CHAMP: Yang Li of China responds to the crowd’s cheers after rewriting the world record in 50m backstroke. HYDERABAD: Yang Li of China set the pool ablaze in the 50m backstroke event with a world record timing of 28.09 seconds in the fourth Military World Games swimming championship at Gachibowli aquatics complex here on Friday. The 24-year-old Li eclipsed the record of Leila Vaziri of USA (28.16) set in the 2007 FINA world championship. It was a dramatic day for the Lietuenant in the Chinese Army as Li’s name did not figure in the starter’s list even though she finished first in the semifinals in the morning. Li left behind the challengers — countrymate Xu Tianlongzi (29.05s) and Russia Zueva Anastasia (29.07s) — finish off the race in grand manner. Remarkably, this world-recorder doesn’t figure in the 2008 Beijing Olympics main team for China. “She has to go through a whole lot of process,” Qiang Wang, head of Chinese delegation, informed the media. It was announced that the world record had to be finally ratified by the FINA, the governing body of world swimming. Union Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju congratulated Li for her achievement.
