Djokovic in semifinals

Nalbandian ousts Nadal

MADRID: Novak Djokovic beat Mario Ancic of Croatia 7-6(2), 6-2 on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Madrid Masters. Later, David Nalbandian powered past Rafael Nadal 6-1, 6-2.

In the first match, the third-seeded Serb’s serve bailed him out of tight spots in the first set, and he broke twice in the second after errors by Ancic to close it out.

Nicolas Kiefer also booked his place in the quarterfinals. Kiefer won 7-6, 7-6 against big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic.

Henin advances

At Zurich, Justine Henin eased into the quarterfinals of the Zurich Open with a 6-3, 6-1 victory on Thursday over Vera Zvonareva of Russia.

Second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia also advanced, surviving a first-set scare before defeating Austrian Sybille Bammer 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Henin next will face Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, who upset seventh-seeded Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 6-3.

In the quarterfinals, Kuznetsova will play Italy’s Francesca Schiavone.
