NEW DELHI: A delegation of officials from Glasgow Metro met Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director E. Sreedharan on Friday to gather information on the preparations being made for providing transportation during the Commonwealth Games in 2010. The delegation was headed by Ron Culley, Chief Executive of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport of Glasgow, which operates the metro system in Glasgow. Glasgow, which has a small metro system of 10.4 km, is one of the oldest metro rail systems in the world that started operations way back in 1896. The city of Glasgow, which is likely to play host to the Commonwealth Games in 2014, is planning an expansion of the existing metro system. The delegation from Glasgow is studying DMRC’s accomplishment of constructing a vast rail network in a short span of time. “The DMRC is one of the best example’s to study for extremely fast expansion in a very short time since we have built 65 km already and are constructing another 120 km before the commencement of the Commonwealth Games in 2010,” said a DMRC official. The delegation will also be travelling on the Delhi Metro on Saturday to get a first-hand experience of the system. “Mr. Yusuf assured the delegation that Delhi would provide all the required help and assistance to Glasgow especially in the field of metro technology and construction,” the official said.
