Sound bytes: Anglo Indian MLA Christine Lazarus beating the drums at the community hall she inaugurated at Soldierpeta in the city on Friday. — VISAKHAPATNAM: Anglo Indian MLA Christine Lazarus has called upon members of the community to utilise the schemes being implemented by the State Government for their welfare. She inaugurated a community hall given by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation to house the office of the Visakha Forum for Anglo Indian Women at Soldierpeta in the old city on Friday. The hall also houses the Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao Computer Centre, K. Vijay Kumar Spoken English and Arts Centre, Anita Pereira Tailoring Centre and the Connors Musical Centre. Addressing the gathering Mrs. Christine Lazarus said that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had agreed to the demand for reimbursement of the tuition fee of every Anglo Indian child pursuing various professional courses in the State. She said it was unfortunate that not many community members were utilising the benefits being given by the Government. Sage adviceShe advised the community members to form into Self Help Groups (SHG s), with 15 members each, so that they could avail themselves of loans of up to Rs.5 lakhs for undertaking income generating programmes. She was all praise for the 22 Anglo Indian women who enrolled to teach English in municipal corporation schools in the city. The street children of Don Bosco would also benefit from the services of the Anglo Indian teachers, she said. Referring to housing schemes, she said that the Chief Minister had promised to sanction houses to all eligible members of the community under the JNNURM schemes with 50 per cent subsidy from the Government of India. Forum president Jacqueline D’ Cruz, vice president Yolander Mc Guinness and community leaders Harold Connor and Mabel Connor and advisory committee member Noel Thomas spoke. Dr. Trevor, a cardiologist, offered to provide free consultation to the community members at the community hall. Later speaking to this reporter, Mrs. Lazarus said that five seats were reserved for children of the community in professional courses like medicine, engineering, polytechnic and B. Sc (nursing). She said that she has appealed to the Chief Minister to sanction 10 more seats in professional courses to the community members and he had agreed to do so. She had also sought that the housing schemes, meant for Below Poverty Line (BPL) groups, to be extended to even middle class Anglo Indians. The computer centre, music centre and other facilities can also be utilised by members of other communities living in the neighbourhood.
