HYDERABAD: The festive spirit was all-pervading. At one end of the city along the banks of Hussainsagar, women sang and danced around Bathukammas. At the other end, the Bengali community left no stone unturned to celebrate Durga Puja with devotion and gaiety.

The next few days, till Vijay Dasami, would continue to showcase the growing multi-ethnic way of celebrating festivals in twin cities. Almost all the vehicles have already started sporting marks of vermillion and plantain stems along with leaves on the eve of Ayudha Puja, which is on Saturday. The cinema theatres were packed to the brim while the wholesale flower market of Jambagh was bustling with activity. Sweet shops were crammed with customers throughout the day. Clad in their best, women made a beeline to temples of various goddesses to take part in Navaratri celebrations. The Tank Bund came alive on Friday night with thousands of women decked up in their finery thronging the banks of Hussainsagar on the culminating day of the traditional Bathukamma festival. The festival is also known as ‘festival of flowers’ and is unique to Telangana.

The whole day, women formed groups around Bathukammas to dance and sing and invoke the blessings of Mother Goddess.
