TAMBARAM: A 67-year-old man was robbed of Rs. 4 lakh in cash by a four-member gang at Raghava Nagar in Madipakkam on Friday.
The police said that Ramakrishnan works for a wood and timber dealer agency. The agency’s proprietor gave him two cheques and he withdrew the sum from the branch of a nationalised bank in Madipakkam a little past noon. When Ramakrishnan reached the office at 12.45 p.m. he was met by four unidentified youth waiting at the entrance. They drew Ramakrishnan into conversation, and one of them pulled out a sharp instrument and threatened him to part with the cash. Even as he tried to resist, the youths snatched the bag and fled on two motorcycles. All of them were reported to be wearing dark red shirts.
The police said they received information about the crime only at 1.15 p.m. Personnel of the Madipakkam sub-division were also pulled up for not alerting policemen in the rest of the St. Thomas Mount district over the wireless, as a result of which checking of motorcyclists on the arterial roads was slightly delayed.
While not ruling out the possibility of professional robbers, police suspect the involvement of some “insiders” passing on information to the suspects.
