CHENNAI: Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan told the Assembly on Friday that 34,028 permanent houses were constructed till September-end for tsunami-hit people after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government came to power.
Winding up a debate on the first supplementary statement of expenditure and voting of demands for further expenditure for the current financial year, Mr. Anbazhagan said 8,406 houses were built when Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi reviewed the status of the relief project in June last year. The Government took over the responsibility of building 3,000 houses, which had been given up by non-governmental organisations.
With the assistance of the Centre and the World Bank, the Government was implementing a scheme to construct 52,000 houses for slum dwellers living in coastal areas.
A sum of Rs. 68 crore had been set apart for maintenance and improvement of government taluk hospitals in the State. A flood protection work would be taken up at Sellur, Madurai, at a cost of Rs. 12 crore. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development would fund it.
