BJP must apologise: Congress

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Taking umbrage at the reaction of the Bhartiya Janata Party to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s comments on that party on Thursday, the Congress on Friday demanded an immediate apology from the BJP leadership.

“The BJP leadership should apologise to not only the Prime Minister but also the entire nation,” chairman of the All India Congress Committee Media Department Veerappa Moily said.

The BJP spokesman’s utterances on Friday were “uncivilised” and nothing less than an apology was called for. “It is not only an insult to the Prime Minister but also the entire country.”

“There is nothing wrong in what the Prime Minister said about the BJP. He is not just the Prime Minister. He is also a politician and a Congressman. There is nothing unparliamentary in what he said. The BJP, on the other hand, is an opportunist party that can do anything for the sake of power,” Mr. Moily said.

During his return from South Africa, when he was asked by accompanying journalists about the Opposition party’s demand for his resignation, Dr. Singh said the BJP was the “least qualified” to talk about the moral right to govern. This was described by BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad as “a desperate rattling of a weakened leader.”
