CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will know on October 22 the government’s formal decision on the nuclear deal with the United States, member of the party’s Polit Bureau Sitaram Yechury told journalists here on Friday. “Grave consequences”The CPI(M), he said, had asked the government not to proceed further with the deal until its objections were fully met with. At the last meeting of the United Progressive Alliance-Left committee, it pointed out the grave consequences of the deal. Mr. Yechury said the committee’s findings would be taken into account by the government while taking a final decision. “The process is still on and our objections had been noted.” Sethu projectOn the Sethusamudram project, he said the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government took the decision and allocated funds. Uma Bharti was the Union Minister concerned, and Yashwant Sinha, as Finance Minister, made allocations. “Now what is their objection? It only exposes their bankruptcy of issues.” Mr. Yechury charged the BJP with attempting to whip up communal and religious issues, anticipating a mid-term general election. “Why are they raising these issues now; that too when the sanction and the go-ahead [for the Sethu project] were given during the NDA government?” he asked. If these leaders had any new issues on the project they could give them to the government, which would consider them during the three-month period it had obtained from the Supreme Court, he said.
