Trouble again at Singur

Special Correspondent

Group tries to storm project premises

Construction work at the site is continuing

No major security concerns: official

Kolkata: Fresh trouble broke out near the site of the Tata Motors’ automobile manufacturing project at Singur in West Bengal on Friday when a group of people tried to storm the premises by damaging the compound wall.

Activists of the Trinamool Congress-led Krishi Jami, Jibika Jiban Raksha (Save Farmland, Livelihood and Lives) Committee were chased away by the police who burst several rounds of teargas shells to disperse them. No damage was caused to the wall, a senior State official said.

The committee has been demanding that the land acquired for the project against the wishes of the farmers be returned.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has vowed to continue the movement against the Singur project and on many occasions threatened that the wall would be pulled down if work at the site was not discontinued until the land, allegedly forcibly taken away from farmers, was returned to them.

Construction work at the site is continuing even though it was hit a few weeks ago due to water-logging, a senior official of the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation told The Hindu.

Improving connectivity

Piling work was over and units that are to be part of the main plant were being set up. Nearly 2, 200 people were engaged in the construction work. The project was expected to be completed by mid-next year. Work to improve connectivity to the adjoining national highway had begun, the official added.

Despite the occasional attempt to damage the compound wall, there were no major security concerns. Both the State police and personnel belonging to private security agencies were deployed in the area, he said.
