Diptayan Ghosh and Monisha win titles

TRIUMPHANT: Monisha and Diptayan Ghosh with the girls’ and boys’ titles.

BANGALORE: Diptayan Ghosh of West Bengal with 9.5 points bagged the title in the boys’ section of the National under-9 chess tournament here on Friday. Pitted against top seed Sidhanth Mohapatra in the final round, Diptayan, needing only a draw to wrap up the title, offered a draw after the seventh move to which Sidhanth agreed.

Ch Mohineesh of Andhra Pradesh and Sardara Preet of Gujarat also agreed to split points on the 11th round leaving Mohinees in third place in the championship.

In the girls’ section, GK Monisha of Tamil Nadu playing the Sicilian Pelikan defence notched up a brilliant win over Sunya Sakta Satpathy to emerge winner. Monisha captured Sunya Sakta’s queen on the 25th move and checkmated her opponent on the 28th move.

Monisha headed the table with 9.5 points out of a possible 11 to take the top spot.

Revanth Reddy (7.5); M. Karthikeyan (7.5) lost to Harikrishnan Mohanan (8.5); Adarsh P. Yeshwanth (8.5) bt Maniar Thirth (7.5). Girls: Sunya Sakta Satpathy (8) lost to GK Monisha (9.5); Sweety Patel (8.5) bt M. Mahalakshmi (8); Shoumi Mukherjee (9) bt Akhankya Kabi (7); C.H. Meghana (8) bt Divya Garg (7); Ivana Maria Furtado (8) bt Gauri Keshav Hadondkar (7).
