CHENNAI: Former Tamil Nadu cricketers S. Ramesh, S. Sharath, and S. Suresh will represent Assam in the Ranji Trophy Plate League in the forthcoming season. Sharath, Tamil Nadu’s highest run-getter in the Ranji Trophy, announced his retirement earlier this year, but decided to rescind it to “help Assam as a senior professional”. He has also been asked to lead the side — an offer he has neither accepted nor declined. “After retiring, I had a break for four or five months, and so I decided to consider the offer,” said Sharath. “Assam has been asking me to join for the last two years. They badly required a senior cricketer because a few of their guys have joined ICL (Indian Cricket League). Also, it’s only five games, so I thought I’d try it for a season.” Sharath said he referred the names of former colleagues Ramesh and Suresh to the Assam Cricket Association. Ramesh had an outstanding season with Kerala in 2006-07, raising feeble hope that he may yet add to his 19 Test appearances. “Assam gave me a better offer, and I feel I can have a better impact on their fortunes,” said the 32-year-old Ramesh. Suresh, who played for Kerala last season, said he would decide on the possibility of a longer term with Assam based on his first season. Sharath and Suresh leave for the camp on October 24. Ramesh will join them on October 28. — Special Correspondent
