Utsav idols being brought to ‘Jammi’ tree in Ongole on Sunday.
ONGOLE: ‘Jammi chettu veedhi’, a narrow and sleepy residential area in Ongole town, buzzed with activity as utsav idols of all temples made a beeline to it to touch the branches of the sacred tree on the auspicious occasion of Vijaya Dasami on Sunday.
While some utsav idols were carried on traditional palanquin, some came on bullock carts and others arrived on autorickshaws from their respective temples to the street and return only after touching the branches.
Festive atmosphere pervaded the town as traditionally dressed women waited at their doorstep to offer coconuts, camphor and other pooja material to the utsav idols passing by their houses.
Hundreds of men and women throng the street to worship the sacred tree. While women break coconuts at the tree, men jumped up to touch the branches and snatch away some leaves. Hawkers sprang up from nowhere to sell a variety of goods – from balloons, toys, fastfood etc to the children making it look like a fair.
The area witnessed hectic activity for over three hours.
