Poor patients to get free meals

Special Correspondent

Novel scheme: President of the Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society Basavaraj Bhimalli distributing free lunch to poor patients at Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital in Gulbarga on Saturday.

GULBARGA: About 250 patients hailing from economically weaker sections admitted to the Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital, run by the Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society (HKES), will henceforth get free lunch and dinner during their stay at the hospital.

The scheme has been conceived by president of the HKES Basavaraj Bhimalli, who had appealed for donations for the purpose. Those wishing to be part of the scheme could donate Rs. 2,500 for one single day’s expenses for supplying the lunch and dinner to the patients, and according to Mr. Bhimalli, the response had been overwhelming.

Mr. Bhimalli, along with other managing council members of the HKES formally inaugurated the scheme at the hospital on Saturday.

The HKES has set up a kitchen with modern cooking facilities in the basement of the hospital and a dietician has been given the responsibility of fixing the menu to the patients as per their requirements.

Mr Bhimalli said patients were now being forced to have their lunch and dinner in the canteen inside the hospital and hotels outside. They would not only get free lunch and dinner, but also quality food as per their diet requirement.

Extending scheme

He said that there were plans to extend the scheme to all patients, and depending on the donations from the philanthropists and the financial condition of the society, a decision on would be taken after a few months.

Those wishing to donate for the scheme can register their names with the Public Relations Officer of the hospital S.S. Hiremath in person or through ph. 09343356222.
