This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru on October 21 appealed to everyone in the country, irrespective of party politics, to help and cooperate in dealing with the difficult food situation facing the country. Mr. Nehru told a press conference on October 21 that the food situation, which was taking “a bad turn because of drought”, was by far the most important thing in his mind at the moment. Previously, they had had floods. But the trouble due to floods, though bad, was temporary and usually left behind a very good harvest. Drought was much worse. This time they had expected a good harvest and they might have had that if there had been the slightest of showers in September or early in October. Mr. Nehru said large parts of Bihar, Orissa, Chattisgarh in Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Andhra and Maharashtra were affected by drought and added: “We shall place whatever information we have before the public. This is not a matter to be dealt with behind the purdah. I wish everybody will cooperate.”
